Mong-Ha Housing LIbrary
The project brief was to transform a set of Portuguese-style row houses - formerly dormitories for civil servants - with green and white exterior walls into a community library. The existing row houses were connected to create a larger space, with an extension added to the rear of the building.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau previously restored the building by preserving its facade, appearance, and spatial characteristics. The space now hosts visual arts exhibitions and related activities, enriching the cultural resources of the area and promoting artistic development in the community.
JWCC's Modus Operandi to the project was to respect the context and existing building by creating architecture that blends seamlessly into the site. The result is a humble yet functional design. To make the space more accessible, we had to remove one of the stairs. However, we maintained its memory by incorporating a staircase feature that doubles as bookshelves. The minimal design of the new extension's façade derives from the concept of a bookcase, which is also introduced throughout the interior to create a consistent aesthetic.
